Reconstructive Surgery

Some of the most advanced and rewarding procedures plastic surgeon Dr. Gregory Surfield performs in his Sandusky practice are reconstructive in nature. While breast reconstruction following a mastectomy is common, Dr. Surfield also possesses skill in correcting cleft lip and palate, hand and skin trauma or injury and in removing some types of skin cancer.

Breast Reconstruction

New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is diagnosed by removing all or part of the growth and examining its cells under a microscope. It can be treated by a number of methods, depending on the type of cancer, its stage of growth, and its location on your body.

Laser Surgery

In the past decade, laser technology has revolutionized many areas of plastic surgery. The laser's allure comes from its ability to "blast" away or diminish imperfections or growths with minimum bleeding, bruising, and scarring.

Tissue Expansion

Tissue expansion is a relatively straightforward procedure that enables the body to "grow" extra skin for use in reconstructing almost any part of the body. A silicone balloon expander is inserted under the skin near the area to be repaired and then gradually filled with salt water over time.

Scar Revision

While no scar can be removed completely, plastic surgeons can often improve the appearance of a scar, making it less obvious through surgical procedures known as scar revisions.

Wound Care

Direct closure is usually performed on skin-surface wounds that have straight edges, such as a simple cut. A wound that is wide and difficult or impossible to close directly may be treated with a skin graft.
